Leaders that understand Gen Z- Ravneet Gill

Edited by: Sukshma S. Upadhyaya

Ravneet Gill is the ex-CEO of Deutsche Bank. He has co-founded  New Horizons Alliance, an advanced sports education institution.

Keep reading to know more about his experience and insights for Gen Z!

Can you share the biggest high of your career?

Building an institution that focused on empathy and diversity as much as it was a meritocracy. That built a culture that embraced change willingly, transitioned seamlessly, and was relentlessly committed to ‘principled growth’ rather than just profit.

What defines you as a leader? As a manager?

Have always viewed myself as a mentor, never as a manager. As a leader, the key metric that I measured myself against was the degree to which I could help each team member become successful.

Any tips on how best to motivate a Gen Z hire?

Empower them as if they’ll lead the institution virtually tomorrow. They relate a lot better to the world we are entering and are better equipped to succeed in it than previous generations. Experience, per se, will become less vital.

Why Talerang?

Because they are pioneers in the field of getting our youth “job-ready” (‘the last mile’ has traditionally been India’s Achilles heel) and are the most accomplished and successful in this respect.

Does a degree matter in these changing times?

It does, but a whole lot less than it did a couple of years back. Today, employers care more about the quality of your education and the skills you’ve learnt.

If you were starting your career now, what would you do and why?

I really enjoyed my time in banking and am, therefore, tempted to say that I’ll play it the same way as I did. However, digitalization has opened so many new opportunities which can enable scaling up over a very short period of time. So making a meaningful impact relatively quickly is now possible and that’s an exciting thought.
