Importance of being pro-active in new age careers
The increasing interest of Gen Z in new age careers has created a whole new array of skills and jobs for youngsters today! However, are skills and aptitude enough to survive the ups and downs in the job market today? The structure of new age companies is such that the emphasis is predominantly on getting the work done. In an era of such competition among students, staying motivated and driving one’s own growth at a firm is pivotal. If you’re thinking of taking up a job after college, be ready to take ownership of the work assigned to you! If you want to stand out, make sure you are putting in the extra effort and going the extra mile to get the work done.
Follow the tips below to keep yourself motivated and ensure you are working smartly towards a better future at the firm:
- Define clear goals and targets: Clarity of vision keeps an individual self-motivated. One needs to plan out his/ her short term, as well as long term goals. Having a clarity on your goals will help you move forward and achieve your goals in the most efficient manner, despite encountering hurdles on the way! As long as you know what you want to achieve and have a structured timeline for the same, motivation should come to you automatically.
- Be pro-active: Never hesitate to take initiative when a new project is being assigned to the team! Even if it’s something you aren’t comfortable with, volunteer for it and learn on the go! Make sure you are showcasing eagerness to work rather than slacking away from responsibilities. Ups and downs are normal in a corporate setup, just make sure you have the right attitude because ultimately your work is your goodwill!
- Take ownership: No matter which company you join, as an entry-level hire, if you want to stand out among the other freshers, learn how to take ownership of your work. If a project has been assigned to you and you require assistance from a team of people, make sure you are driving the project constantly. Check-in with the concerned people regularly and make sure they are working toward the deadlines suggested by you. At the end of the day, make sure the work gets done comfortably without too many last minute urgencies.
- Request Feedback: An important aspect to ensure you are on track and working toward the company’s broader goals is to regularly ask for feedback. Make sure you block some time on your manager’s calendar on a weekly basis and ask for his/ her views on the quality of your work. What have you been doing well, how could it be better, is your turnaround time good or can it be improved etc. Apart from helping you improve, this also shows that you are willing to put in the extra effort and value feedback from your manager!
