Grooming and Problem Solving

Entering week 4 we had a brief idea that we were going to dive deeper into Grooming,Etiquette and Problem Solving. Contrastingly different topics, that use different parts of the brain and body too.

We had taken surveys about our grooming habits and found that we were below the bar on only a few parameters, which was a relief.

Shuchi Kothari mentored us through this session. She is the Founder of Portemode.com, an e-commerce fashion website and has completed her MBA from Harvard Business School. She has previously studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York and at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania).

She gave us valuable tips on hair, nails, clothes, skin, body language and posture. I I knew all about hair, nails and clothes but when we actually sat down to discuss this we realized things we’d never even considered. Shuchi even gave us personal feedback depending on what would work best for each one of us.

A few great tips she gave the class as a whole was to:

  • Keep a deodorant and a bunch of mints at all times
  • Have clean and polished shoes at all times
  • The importance of having short, clean, manicured nails to name a few

We even polished our dining etiquettes. We were given different types, shapes and sizes of food with tips on what and how to eat in a professional setting. Again this may seem simple but we all found that we make so many mistakes and don’t even realize we are making them.

Finally we used and discussed different techniques to solve problems. We concentrated on Edward Debono’s 6 Thinking hats, the 5 why analysis and Porters 5 forces.

The problem solving session was of great value to me because I am very impulsive when it comes to problem solving and just go with my gut. Going forward I feel am better equipped to solve problems in a more systematic and logical manner. After exploring the different problem solving techniques we actually took up a real life-consulting case study, split into groups, broke the problem down and finally presented our pitch to the entire class.

The case helped me understand that you can reach the answer by asking the right questions. And that problem solving is more about your approach and not just the answer.

I hope I was able to give you an insight into our day that was centered around

Grooming, Etiquette and Problem Solving.
