Tips to keep in mind while applying for multiple jobs at one time!

According to Harvard Business Review, almost 80% of the people who are applying for jobs, look at a minimum of 5 companies at once. With tough competition during your campus placements and difficulty to apply directly, many chose to send out as many as applications they can. Before applying for multiple jobs, research the companies you are applying to and understand whether they will be the right fit for you. Think about your interests and the mission of the company and check for overlap. Once you have made a shortlist, don’t send the same application to all of them. You can keep the following suggestions in mind as you prepare.

1. Tailor your application for each position
Submit a separate CV and cover letter tailored to each job. This will show the recruiter you thought about how you are a strong candidate for the position. Use the knowledge from your research to create an application that shows your interest in working for the company. For example, for a marketing role, emphasize your creative side and at a finance or consulting firm, focus on your data and analytical skills. If you’re applying for a core engineering role emphasize your technical skills.

2. Stay authentic while applying                                                                                                                    Don’t exaggerate your skills just to get all the jobs you are applying to. Stick to the truth in your application irrespective of how difficult or different a job application might seem. Employers today conduct background checks. Additionally companies have 2-3 rounds of reference checks before they onboard you. Be honest about your past work and experiences with your employer so that they will be able to support you in your transition to the new job. For example, if you’re applying for a finance role but you don’t know financial modelling, be honest and open with your potential employer.

3. Update your online professional profile
Join discussion and industry groups to link with organisations, recruitment companies and leading figures in your sector. Post links to interesting comments, websites and articles as often as you can. LinkedIn is widely used by most professionals and is one of the best networking platforms. If you have not made an online profile yet, set one up and use it to build connections and apply to jobs directly through LinkedIn Jobs. This will allow you to track multiple job applications easily and keep in touch with multiple recruiters at once.

You may be lucky and get multiple job offers. After hearing back from companies, make sure you take a timely decision. Never accept multiple job offers. Instead, decide your preference in advance and plan out your acceptance accordingly. Inform the companies awaiting your confirmation if you are not joining so as not to keep them hanging. Maintain good relations with all the companies you applied to by sending them a thank you mail irrespective of whether you were selected or will join. Applying to multiple roles is a juggling act so stay calm and positive while you do it!
