Weddings have a huge demand in India and if you wish to enter this career space there are various areas you can specialise in. You can look at fields such as jewellery, decor, flowers, design, catering and celebrity management. According to WeddingSutra, the Indian wedding market is estimated around ₹33,000 crore, the world’s second-largest market. Some people earn a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management. Others do not get formal training but learn their skills on-the-job through great interpersonal skills. To prepare yourself for this growing industry, you need to look into some important avenues.
1. Develop the right skills
If you love communicating, meeting new people, staying on field and coming up with creative ideas, the wedding industry can be a good fit. You should first gain relevant experience in these fields by interning at a wedding management company or working full-time at any event company, and attending networking events. You can visit wedding online forums and read wedding success stories to get a glimpse of the industry.
2. Educate yourself on the market
Read bridal magazines, study fashion and colour trends. Make yourself comfortable with every area of wedding planning so that you are not only an expert planner but also an expert florist, decorator, photographer, videographer, caterer, cake designer and linen specialist. Identify vendors that you love in your area and create an affiliation with them. Use social media, event planning blogs and online adverts if you are serving a particular niche, advertise to event planning blogs.
3. Build relationships with stakeholders
Invest your time and energy into developing relationships with other wedding professionals. You’ll create referral sources for new business, and you’ll get an understanding of which vendors are professional and reputable. You can attend wedding exhibitions and wedding trunk shows, watch global trends for inspiration and check local designs in your area. Contact wedding vendors directly to set up lunch meetings and gain insights about wedding trends.
With so many celebrity weddings in India, there is a huge craze for the wedding market. If you plan to start your own business, you must know that this career option is hectic. You require great organisational ability and attention to detail. If not, there are many more fields in the event planning business such as corporate events, sponsor events, celebrity shows and more!
